Rack and Pinion theories
A Rack and Pinion is usually a couple of gears engaged with each other. The pinion may be a circular gear that meshes using the linear gear referred to as the rack. This mechanized engagement turns revolving action into linear movement as the mechanism moves in a straight path. Rack and Pinion device is mostly applicable in cars with steering action and in many cases on other vehicles with wheel steering engagement. Both the rack and the pinion are housed in gear boxes caked heavily with lubricants. Both the gears are housed in such a way to avoid dirt and mud from going the system. If it does, it will damage the mechanism and destroy the system.

It will never skid down the tracks as it is rotated into linear motion uphill and is steadily engaged on the rack by the pinion.
